ZION TRAVELER BAPTIST CHURCH ADDITION

After a fire claimed the 1871-founded church in 1923, the new first story of Zion Traveler Baptist Church was erected in 1928.  The new second story followed in 1943.  Now, eighty years later, some members of the congregation have difficulties getting up to the second level worship space.  The church expressed a need for an elevator to not only carry members up to the second level, but also caskets for funeral services.

The solution was to construct an addition large enough to house an interior stair and hospital-grade elevator.  The double-volume space creates a grander entrance into the worship area.  An entry plaza composed of low seating walls and landscaping ushers congregation members towards the covered drop-off area.  A brick motif featuring a cross and a pointed arch, as well as window patterning, reflect design details of the existing church.
